Artist who we have lost, but will not be forgotten
Paul Whaley - As the drummer on Blue Cheer's first three albums, Paul Whaley helped define the sound of heavy metal. He left the band in 1969, but returned for several reunions. Whaley died on Jan. 28 at the age of 72 from heart failure.
Stephen Ellis played bass in Survivor from 1981-87. He joined the band after the first album, playing on all their major hits, and returned for a few years in the late 90's. Ellis passed away on Feb. 28TH
Paul Raymond, the keyboardist and guitarist from UFO who also did stints in Savoy Brown and the Michael Schenker Group, has died only a few days after the band concluded a tour. He was 73.
Scots drummer Ted McKenna, known for stints with Michael Schenker, Ian Gillan, Rory Gallagher and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, among others, died during surgery at the age of 68. McKenna was a member of Scottish heavy rock band Tear Gas, who became the Sensational Alex Harvey Band in 1972 when they teamed up with frontman Alex Harvey. They split in 1977 and McKenna went on to join Gallagher’s band then Michael Schenker Group.
Mike Grose, who died on March 8, was Queen's first bassist, playing with the band for their first three shows in the summer of 1970. After leaving the band, he returned to his native Cornwall, where he joined a band with singer Tim Staffell, whose departure from Brian May and Roger Taylor's previous band, Smile, paved the way for Freddie Mercury to join forces with them.
Guitarist Bernie Tormé joined Ozzy Osbourne's band in the immediate aftermath of Randy Rhoads' death. Prior to that he'd played in Ian Gillan of Deep Purple's self-named band. He died on March 17, one day shy of his 67th birthday, after a battle with double pneumonia.
